1969, over forty years ago today, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped into history as they walked tentatively onto the dusty, desolate surface of the moon. This one endeavour changed the face of history. Forty years on and still the moon remains a mystery, why have we not returned, did we even get there? Conspiracy theories are flooding the internet on this famous anniversary and Google is all set to add fuel to the debate with the addition of “The Moon” to Google earth 5.

During a special presentation at the Washington D.C. Newseum, Google announced the launch of a brand new interactive feature to Google Earth 5. “The Moon” in Google Earth offers a 3D virtual tour which has been narrated by moon walking legend Buzz Aldrin.

“Forty years ago, two human beings walked on the Moon. Starting today, with Moon in Google Earth, it’s now possible for anyone to follow in their footsteps,” said Michael Weiss-Malik, Moon in Google Earth Product Manager.

The new feature will offer a virtual tour, panoramic images of the lunar landscape, satellite images, details of the Apollo missions and factoids and locations of space debris from different missions. It’s an amazing addition and can be easily accessed by simple searching for “Moon” in Google Earth.
